Samsung SCX-4728FD Multifunctional Printer
Feb 15th, 2012 | By SimonThe SCX-4728FD was shipped to me in its retail package; typically multifunctional printers are bulky and difficult to carry. I was surprised by the size of the SCX-4728FD. The package weighs roughly 25 lbs and is approximately 19″x18″x16″.
The sides of the box offer some good information about the SCX-4728FD. On this particular panel we can see the two flavours of the SCX-4728FD – one is white and the other is grey. It also notes three of the key features: automatic double-sided printing, high quality and fast speed, fax connectivity. Another side of the box prints the specifications: 29 PPM in letter, 250 sheet capacity, 1 sheet manual tray, high-speed USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n for the FW model. The top of the printer box is not wasted either, the printer dimensions are noted as well as the package contents and compatible operating systems.
Opening up the box I can assure you that the printer was very well secured. It was placed in a plastic bag and nestled between Styrofoam blocks. The first thing I could pull out of the printer were the accessories: quick installation guide, software CD, power cord and phone line.
The meat of the box is definitely the printer. On the front we can see the paper output tray just below the scanning bed. To the right we have the control panel with a 2-line display. At the bottom of the printer we can see the paper tray and just above that is the manual feeder. While the printer takes up the full frame of the picture, it measures a mere 16″x13″x15″. This is considerably smaller than MFPs a few years ago. I remember in 2005 when we reviewed the SCX-4720F and it was 17″x17″x18″!
On the sides there is not too much to see. There are slits for ventilation on both panels and on one side there appears to be a cover which you can remove to install more RAM if you need it. The SCX-4728FD is equipped with a 533 Mhz CPU and 128 MB RAM.
The back of printer gives us a look of the backend of the paper tray, the pull down cover for straight-through printing and the I/O connections (fax, LAN, USB and power).
The top of the printer doesn’t look like much, the automatic document feeder and paper output tray.
As one would expect, below the ADF is the scanning bed. Nothing special here, the scanning bed is primarily for 8.5″x13″ sheets of paper but can scan legal size via the document feeder.
Just before we move on, a quick look at the bottom of the printer. The paper tray definitely takes up most of the space but you can see the four hard rubber feet. These rubber feet will help dampen any vibration created during printing.
