The QNAP TS-419P+ was shipped in a brown cardboard box. A large sticker reveals the contents of the package and the text print on the back lists generic features shared by all QNAP NAS units. I really wish they put the handle back on the package to make it easier to carry.

Once you peel the box open we see how well the TS-419P+ is packaged. The packing foam is a couple inches thick making it very unlikely for the TS-419P+ to be damaged during shipment.

Along with the Turbo NAS there is a small cardboard box with the accessories: screws for hard drive installation, two network cables, one power brick, one power cord, one quick start guide and one CD for initialization.

The TS-419P+ is further protected with a tight wrapping plastic bag. Pulling all this apart we get our first good look the device. It looks very similar to the other QNAP Turbo NAS devices we’ve reviewed. The front bezel is made of black with hot-swappable vertical installing drives. Each drive has an LED indicator and a series of LEDs gives you indication on status, LAN, USB and eSATA. At the top there is a LCD panel that gives you the ability to configure the device locally but also serves as a great troubleshooting device telling you if a network cable has been unplugged or just to get an overall health check on the unit. At the bottom left there is a power buttoN, a One Touch Copy button and a single USB 2.0 port.

QNAP uses what feels like 0.8 mm steel painted gunmetal to enclose the hardware. There are a few ventilations holes on the one side and a small sticker on the top to give owners a reference of the hard drive order.

At the back we have another set of inputs. A fan cools the hard drives as well as the passively cooled Marvell processor. From top to bottom there is a Reset button, two eSATA ports, two Gigabit LAN connections, three USB 2.0 ports, one power connector and one K-Lock Security Slot. If the four internal drives weren’t enough the option to add another five just on the back should satisfy your craving!

The QNAP TS-419P+ sits on 4 rubber feet. Each feet provides good traction and with the weight of four hard drives the TS-419P+ won’t shift off your desk if you accidentally bump it.

If we pull out the four drive bays we can see the heart of the TS-419P+. The design hasn’t changed very much, there’s a daughter board that provides eSATA data and power to the hard drives. The motherboard is located on the left side where all the components are passively cooled.
