OCZ’s website has very little information regarding this series of platinum memory. I’ve pulled down the only available content and placed it directly below.

And here’s the first blow to my overclocking dreams, these modules use unmarked generic integrated components. Searching on Google revealed nothing about these individual parts. Hopefully, this will not hurt the Platinum’s overclocking prowess.

Using a standard module height, installing the RAM was a simple task and should prove just as easy to any purchaser of this product. After the installation, I fired up my rig and set the BIOS for the modules default settings. Fortunately, OCZ uses failsafe timings for the default SPD, so any motherboard will boot just after installing these modules.

Before proceeding any further with testing, it’s my preference to stress test the modules at their stock settings to quash any fears of a DOA module. Testing procedure for memory stability is as follows:

  • Memtest 86+ for 12 Hours
  • OCCT 3.1 CPU Test with large data set for 24 Hours
  • Prime 95 blend running simultaneously with OCCT for 24 Hours

Half way through the rigorous testing process, one DIMM started to cause system instability even at stock timings. My heart sank, one module was DOA either from the get go of manufacturing or during shipment. We’ll never know the root cause.

Now, I should note here that this is the first time I’ve ever had a DOA product from OCZ, and I’ve been a repeat customer for six years. After a quick e-mail, a new kit was on its way to my bench and a few days later testing resumed. The second set of RAM passed the burn in test with flying colors. Time to find out how much more overclocking gas these modules have in the tank.

Just for fun, here’s a few screenshots from CPU-Z at max clocks on the first kit.
