Lite-On eHAU424 External DVD Writer
Apr 12th, 2010 | By NivedhI will be testing the Lite-ON eHAU424 with my Dell XPS m1330 laptop. I connected it to a USB port and it was instantly recognized. No software needs to be installed. I tried installing the including Nero 8 burning software but unfortunately, it is incompatible with Windows 7. I’ll be using Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.7.16 for testing.
First, I tested the drive with a RiData brand DVD+R rated at 16x. I couldn’t find any 24x DVDs on short notice, which is the drive’s maximum claimed write speed.

The maximum speed reached 16x, which is very impressive. However, the curve had a few jitters. Read speeds reached only 12x and leveled off around there which isn’t terrible since the drive’s maximum read speed is 16x. This lower speed is likely a media issue. The disc quality score was 90 and the surface scan showed no defects.
Next, I tried a Memorex (Moser Baer) 52x CD-R.

CD write speeds almost reached 49x. Read speeds reached almost 52x. The disc quality score was very high at 98 and the surface scan showed no defects.
The drive is not obnoxiously loud when writing or reading. In fact, it is quieter than my laptop’s internal DVD drive.
The Lite-On eHAU424 performed well in all areas.
