ATEN VM0404H HDMI Matrix Switch
Aug 12th, 2010 | By SimonThe ATEN VM0404H HDMI Matrix Switch arrived in a long and narrow box. From the outside you could never tell it was the VM0404H until you found the sticker on the one edge. The sticker tells you the model number, package contents and power adapter model.

The carrying handle is at the top of the box which easily flips open so you can pull out the switch, rack mount kit, power plug and an accessory box. Inside the accessory box, we have a remote control, four rubber feet and a quick start guide.

The remote control is thin and light, just larger than a business card and about 2 quarters thick. It is powered by a user-removable CR2025 battery. The fits well in my hand and the buttons have a good response to them.

Pulling out the VM0404H HDMI Matrix Switch, I was a bit underwhelmed. The metal chassis has been painted flat black which will allow it to fit into any decor and it is also the exact width of a rack mount box for enterprise users. The front of the switch which would be exposed to your guests in your entertainment room lacks some finesse. Along the front, we have the name of the device, ATEN 4×4 Matrix, and 4 push buttons with lettering all around. The overall appearance would have been nicer if the front face were polished since it’ll be in front of all your guests. It also bothers me that the push buttons are centered in the circle as I’m a big fan of symmetry and this frame just doesn’t quite do it for me. However, I work in the engineering world and it’s function over form first.

On the pack of the HDMI Switch we have 4 HDMI inputs and 4 HDMI outputs. We also have a power receptacle, a K-lock slot and a serial port for system control. As an end user, all you need to be concerned about is the HDMI inputs, outputs and the power receptacle to get the ATEN VM04040H working.

The top of the chassis has the words “VanCryst” printed in the middle. VanCryst is the product line in which this Matrix Switch belongs. It was introduced March 2010 and contains only the finest professional equipment ATEN has to offer. On the bottom of the chassis, we have a sticker with the model number and serial number.

Overall, there’s not a whole lot to see with the ATEN VM0404H. It’s what it does that will make the difference. To get to that point, we’ll start by having a look at the features and specifications.
