To a novice installing a new kit of memory will seem daunting but it is actually one of the easier things to do. Memory kits only fit into the DIMM slots one way, all you need to do is match the notch point and then push the module into your motherboard! Here’s how the Corsair Vengeance looks installed.

The Corsair Vengeance was aimed to impress enthusiasts and that means it has to be able to overclock. With an operating voltage of 1.5v, it would be a huge tease if we didn’t get any boost at the typical 1.65V setting.
The first step of my overclocking was to increase the frequency without changing the timing or voltage, until the system became unstable. In today’s testing I defined stability as successfully passing a loop of 3DMark Vantage, PCMark Vantage and error checking the memory in MemTest Pro for over 500% and a completion of 32M HyperPi calculation. The system also had to pass a week of regular PC usage at that frequency to make sure there were no abnormal restarts or program errors. I managed to increase the frequency to 842Mhz (DDR3-1680). This is basically a free performance boost without paying a penny!

The next test in my overclocking journey was to increase the voltage to 1.65v and see how high I could go without having to increase the CAS to 10. I hit a wall at a frequency of 937Mhz (DDR3-1680). My timing was 9-10-9-27, only a small change from the 9-9-9-27 default.

The performance boost isn’t bad for a budget kit. I’m actually impressed. Some readers have managed over DDR3-2000 speeds but my luck was not as good. Never-the-less, I’m not disappointed. Let’s see how the kit performances.
